VW Type can be traced back to 2002, following the publishing editor's cross-North America road trip in search a 10-second Volkswagen, which raised an important question: why are there no watercooled VW magazines in North America?
This saw the rise of four 96-page issues of a North America-driven lifestyle magazine called VW Compact, later known as VW Style, completed in 2003. A subsequent 12 months planned on the back burner somehow turned into 20-plus years....
2025 marks a positive shift firmly back to this still-exciting, and still-untapped, brand-smitten concept. The magazine may have changed name ever so slightly, grown a little to encompass the global market, and blossomed in size, but the editorial style, illustrative tone and breathing space gifted to its road trips, historical focus, in-depth studies of Volkswagen design and a thirst for imaginative projects firmly remain.
VW Type is a premium slant on the fascinating world of watercooled Volkswagens, taking the form of a glorious 148-page elegantly-bound book-like quarterly print magazine, presenting inspiring words and pictures. VW Type features beautifully illustrated stories of both originality and speciality; of factory intended to ambitious re-imaginations; of archeological journeys – from the 1970s through to the present day – celebrating creative people, a shared passion, record passes, and the places they all took place.
VW Type will be published four times a year under ISSN 2977-2052, with a proposed rhythm of February, May, July and November.
Jon Saxon is the former editor-in-chief of the Dubai-based international edition of evo magazine, as well as the UK-based Doghouse: the much-celebrated British pub magazine. Jon has also worked as a writer for a plethora of print magazines over the last 30-plus years, including The Golf, Fast Car, Eurotuner, Performance Auto & Sound, Sports Car International, J Tuner, and Car.
His passion for Volkswagens in particular started when a black MK1 Golf overtook the school bus in 1988 – a 1.6 GTI that belonged to the brother of the girl he was sat next to. As soon as he could he purchased an identical model. The second Mk1 GTI he bought was used in 1994 to challenge the record of visiting all 62 counties of mainland Britain in the quickest time, sponsored by Continental, Borbet, NextBase and Pentax. The event was covered by media partner VW Motoring in their December 1994 issue, which Jon was invited to write – kickstarting a global career in automotive journalism. There have been many magazine articles and Mk1 Golfs since.
Jon is also the author of the 2002 paperback, Quarter Mile and Then Some: in search of a 10-second car and is the host of the Mixcloud journey into hip-hop podcast, The Extended Version.

“Every year the editors of this report think they’ve seen it all when it comes to wild and whacky innovations and flights of magazine fancy. But, without fail, we’re stunned again by the brilliant (and bizarre) ideas coming out of the minds of the world’s top magazine thinkers. This year we found a magazine published as a double-side A0 poster featuring invisible smart-phone triggers with an enfolded 7-inch vinyl record in the poster [containing the contents page, rapped by Afro Kingz and Mike Baker The Bike Maker]” Innovations in Magazine Media, 2013 World report
